The Los Angeles Zoo and the neighboring Autry Museum of the American West were closed Tuesday after a man possibly armed with a gun was reported in the museum parking lot.
Officers responded at 4:38 a.m. Tuesday to the 4700 block of Western Heritage Way, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The man was in an SUV in the museum’s parking lot, which was closed at the time, according to a report from the scene.
Police cordoned off the area around the museum. Exits from the southbound Golden State (5) and Ventura (134) freeways to Zoo Drive were also closed by the California Highway Patrol at the LAPD’s request.
The man was taken into custody around 11:20 a.m., LAPD Officer Kevin Terzes said.
Museum officials said the facility would be closed.
The zoo, which was to open at 10 a.m., announced that it would remain closed Tuesday as well, but later announced that it would reopen at 1 p.m.
