A 24-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a 19-year-old in La Quinta nearly six years ago was arraigned Wednesday on murder and related charges.
Jorge Victor Andres Huerta-Arias of Whitewater was arrested Friday following a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigation into the death of Anthony Carrillo.
Huerta-Arias is charged with murder, along with sentence-enhancing allegations of discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury and engaging in criminal street gang activity.
He was arraigned Wednesday before Superior Court Judge Arthur Hester at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
Huerta-Arias was being held on $3 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Jarred Bishop said that deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 53000 block of Avenida Madero shortly after 12 a.m. on Oct. 26, 2019.
Carrillo was found with gunshot wounds inside a residence and later died at a hospital, Bishop said.
The case remained unsolved for several years until new evidence led investigators to Huerta-Arias, Bishop said. A possible motive has not been disclosed.
Huerta-Arias has no documented prior convictions in Riverside County.
