A 28-year-old man accused of trying to kill a Coachella resident pleaded not guilty Thursday to attempted murder and other charges.
Cecilio Nando Gonzalez was arrested Saturday following a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigation in the 84000 block of Avenue 51 in Coachella.
Along with attempted murder, Gonzalez is charged with assault using a semiautomatic firearm, mayhem and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.
He was arraigned before Superior Court Judge Arthur Hester, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for July 21 at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
Gonzalez is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Benoit Detention Center.
According to sheriff’s officials, patrol deputies were sent to the Avenue 51 residence shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday to investigate reports of a shooting.
When the deputies arrived, they found a man with life-threatening gunshot wounds. The victim, whose identity was not released, was taken to a Coachella Valley trauma center, where he was in stable condition Thursday.
Detectives confirmed that Gonzalez was the alleged assailant, and he was located and taken into custody without incident near the scene of the attack, for which a possible motive was not disclosed.
He has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
