One man was fatally shot during a confrontation with Los Angeles Police Department officers Thursday evening in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles.
The shooting was reported at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Hyde Park and Crenshaw boulevards, where officers from the department’s Gang Unit saw two men arguing. When the officers went to investigate the confrontation, one suspect fired several shots, LAPD Officer David Cuellar told City News Service.
The LAPD officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.
It was not immediately clear if the suspect was shooting at the officers or the man with whom he was arguing, Cuellar said.
Cuellar said the LAPD was interviewing the second man, who was not taken into police custody.
The shooting occurred at the same location as a candlelight vigil turned violent when LAPD officers came under attack Tuesday night and at least eight patrol vehicles had their tires punctured.
It was not immediately known if there was a connection between the two incidents.
