A 21-year-old man was facing charges Thursday after investigators determined he ran a red light at a Pomona intersection, striking a woman and a young girl and fatally injuring the child.

The crash happened about 8 p.m. on May 28 at Towne and Lexington avenues, according to the Pomona Police Department.

“Upon arrival, officers located two pedestrians with severe injuries lying in the roadway on Towne Avenue,” according to a police statement.

“An adult female was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, a female child succumbed to her injuries at the scene. At the time of the incident the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.”

The Pomona Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team conducted “a comprehensive investigation” that determined the driver — identified as Manuel Jimenez of Upland — ran a red light and struck the pedestrians.

A warrant was issued for his arrest earlier this month, and he voluntarily surrendered, with a court appearance scheduled for September, police said.
