A 26-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday and was sentenced to more than 13 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl on a trail in Irvine.

Police were called about 6 p.m. Jan. 2, 2023, to a report of a sexual assault on the Peters Canyon Trail near Irvine Boulevard and the state Route 261 toll road.

Larry Molina grabbed and sexually assaulted the teen after she passed him on the trail, police said. She fought him off and was able to run away to a nearby home and call for help, police said.

Molina pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual penetration of a child older than 14 by foreign object and by force, a count of assault with the intent to commit a sex offense, false imprisonment and attempted forcible rape, all felonies.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Larry Yellin sentenced Molina to 13 years and eight months in prison. Molina had 1,085 days credit behind bars since his arrest.
