A 47-year-old motorist suspected of causing a collision that injured two boys in Calimesa, then fleeing the scene, was out of custody Monday after posting a $35,000 bond.

Jaime Jose Aviles Munoz of Yucaipa was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on Saturday on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in great bodily injury.

Munoz satisfied his bail requirement Sunday afternoon and was released from the Riverside jail.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, at about 3:30 p.m. Friday, the suspect was driving in the area of Calimesa Boulevard and Myrtlewood Drive, just east of Interstate 10, when he allegedly plowed into a vehicle occupied by the victims, teenagers whose identities were not disclosed.

After the collision, Munoz immediately fled, sheriff’s Sgt. Roman Lugo alleged.

He said the two boys were taken to a regional trauma center with major but non-life-threatening injuries.

One was released from the hospital Sunday, while the other was in stable condition Monday.

Lugo said the ensuing investigation pointed to Munoz as the alleged hit-and-run driver, and deputies served an arrest warrant at his residence Sunday morning in the 34000 block of Avenue E, where he was taken into custody without incident.

An unidentified passenger who was with him when the crash happened was questioned but not arrested, according to the sergeant.

Background information on Munoz was unavailable, though jail records indicated he had a separate felony case pending in San Bernardino County.

  1. This is disgusting. What is wrong with our system. Almost killed 2 children and passenger said the driver was so drunk he was scared before the incident.
