An alleged wrong-way driver who was killed in an alcohol-related freeway crash in Burbank was identified by the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office Monday.

Martin Reyes Gomez, 52, died at the scene of the crash about 3:45 a.m. Sunday on the northbound side of the Golden State (5) Freeway at Alameda Avenue.

A vehicle was traveling northbound in the number one lane when it hit the southbound, vehicle which was going the wrong way, said authorities. Another vehicle crashed into the vehicle that had initially struck the wrong-way vehicle, and that vehicle landed on its roof.

“After the crash, all vehicles remained on scene,” CHP Officer Shanelle Phillips said, adding that Gomez was found dead inside the vehicle he was driving.

“Alcohol is considered to be a factor to this crash,” Phillips said.

It is unclear if the suspected use of alcohol referred to Gomez, whose primary causes of death were listed as aortic dissection and rupture and atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, according to the medical examiner.

A Sigalert was issued at 4:28 a.m. Sunday closing all northbound lanes of the freeway at Alameda Avenue and was canceled at 8:46 a.m.
