A 59-year-old man suspected in the killing of a 51-year-old man in Coachella remained in custody Saturday.

Deputies from the Thermal sheriff’s station responded to the intersection of Calle Limon and Genoa Street around 11:37 a.m. on Sept. 21 to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

They found the victim lying on the ground suffering from a possible gunshot wound. Deputies immediately began life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit assumed the investigation and later identified the victim as Enrique Arrieta of Coachella.

The suspect was identified as Rafael Moreno of Coachella. Investigators, assisted by the Riverside District Attorney’s Office Gang Impact Team and the sheriff’s Coachella Community Action Team, located Moreno on Wednesday near a residence in the 85000 block of Nile Lane in Coachella. He was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center, where he was being without bail on suspicion of murder.

Anyone with information regarding the fatal attack was urged to call Central Homicide Unit Investigator Adams at 951-955-2777.
