A 30-year-old man, who prompted a police standoff after barricading himself in an Indio residence, was in custody Thursday for allegedly stabbing his brother.

Officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon shortly after 6:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 82000 block of Valencia Avenue, according to the Indio Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers found a 32-year-old man inside the residence suffering from multiple stab wounds. They rendered first aid until paramedics arrived and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. He was listed in stable condition.

Police said the suspect, whose identity was not revealed, allegedly attacked his brother for unspecified reasons with a crowbar to the head and then stabbed him several times with a knife.

He fled the scene before officers arrived.

The suspect returned to the residence, where a witness saw him enter the home and called authorities shortly before 10:30 a.m. Thursday, the department stated.

After officers arrived at the scene and attempted multiple times to communicate with the suspect through a tactic called surround and callout, the suspect refused to leave the residence, which prompted a standoff. Desert Regional S.W.A.T was requested to assist at the scene.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., the man exited the residence and was arrested without further incident.

Road closures on Valencia Avenue between Sungold Street and Palm Street, and Sungold between Tahquitz Avenue and Hoover Avenue have since fully reopened.

The suspect was booked into Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of attempted homicide.

Anyone with information regarding the incident was encouraged to call 760-391-4057, or report tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
