Police Tuesday released details about an exchange of gunfire with a suspect in Canoga Park.

No one was hit in the shooting, which occurred after officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Topanga Division responded around 12:40 p.m. Monday to the 8300 block of Northgate Avenue to investigate reports of a man pointing a handgun at a female victim.

“The comments of the call indicated that the suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Marcus Hayes, was armed with a firearm and had pointed it at the person reporting the incident,” according to an LAPD statement.

Hayes ran past arriving officers, ignoring orders to drop his weapon, leading to a foot chase, police said.

“Officers followed Hayes as he traversed through apartment buildings before returning to Northgate Avenue, where he stopped and faced the officers while still holding the firearm,” according to the LAPD. “Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Hayes raised the gun and fired at the officers, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Hayes then threw the firearm onto the street and raised his hands.”

It was unclear how many officers returned fire or how many shots were fired during the exchange.

Hayes allegedly put up a bit of a fight, attempting to strike officers who took him into custody, but he was not hit by gunfire and no officers or members of the public were injured.

A loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol and a 15-round magazine were recovered at the scene and booked as evidence, police said.
