A suspect armed with a knife is in police custody Wednesday after engaging police in a nearly five-hour standoff near Pacoima, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

Police responded to a residence at 10:18 p.m. Tuesday in the 11000 block of Remick Avenue and Chamberlain Street near the Golden State (5) Freeway regarding a possible suicide. Officers saw the suspect, who they say was in an alley with a knife, which they repeatedly urged him to drop, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.

After he refused to comply with the officers’ orders to surrender, police fired less-than-lethal rounds at the suspect, who was knocked down but stood up again, the LAPD said.

The Los Angeles County Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team was contacted to negotiate a potential surrender. The team assisted police in coaxing the suspect into surrendering, which he did around 3:10 a.m. Wednesday.

No one was injured during the standoff.
