A 55-year-old suspect who allegedly stabbed a person in Cathedral City and was subsequently shot by police died Tuesday.
Officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at 7:08 p.m. Monday on Via Minorca in the Date Palm Country Club, according to the Cathedral City Police Department.
According to the caller, a person they knew forced their way into a residence and stabbed one of the occupants, Cmdr. Jon Enos said.
Officers located the suspect, who was armed with a weapon, standing outside the residence, Enos said. An officer ultimately opened fire, striking the suspect. It was unclear exactly what prompted the gunfire.
Paramedics took the stabbing victim and suspect to a hospital. The victim was treated and released, Enos said.
Police recovered a weapon at the scene of the crime, and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Force Investigation Detail responded to the scene to investigate. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.
The officer who shot the suspect was described only as a 13-year law enforcement veteran. He will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, Enos said. The department’s Professional Standards Bureau will conduct an internal investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred.
No officers were injured during the shooting.
