A fire broke out near Acton Friday and scorched an estimated 280 acres, with the potential to spread across 600 acres, despite what was described as a moderate rate of spread.

The blaze was reported at 11:23 a.m. Friday in the area of North Crown Valley and Soledad Canyon roads, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department., which indicated that units arrived to a second-alarm fire that had burned 80 acres at a “moderate rate of spread.”

Initially, crews said the fire had to the potential to grow to as many as 300 acres, and by 1:30 p.m. it had burned nearly that many and was on a course to burn another 300 acres, according to the county fire department.

Some structures were being threatened by the flames, and some evacuations were ordered in the area, but it was unclear how many people were affected.

The National Weather Service reported northeast winds were at 18 mph in Acton, with temperatures around 65 degrees and 15% humidity.
