Ten people, including eight children, were injured Monday when a transit van crashed on the Hollywood (170) Freeway in Sun Valley and forced a closure that severely hampered traffic through the area.

The single-vehicle crash was reported around 2:15 p.m. Monday on the southbound side of the freeway near Sherman Way, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

It was unclear what caused the crash, but the silver van would up facing the wrong way alongside the center freeway median. Some thunderstorms moved through parts of the San Fernando Valley Monday afternoon and the freeway appeared to be wet at fire crews responded to the scene, but it was unknown if the weather played a factor.

Fire officials said all 10 patients were taken to hospitals in fair condition. Unconfirmed reports from the scene indicated at least one of the victims may have been an infant only a few weeks old.

The four left lanes of the freeway were closed while fire crews and paramedics responded to the scene of the crash.
