An underground 16-inch oil pipeline in East Los Angeles was damaged Friday morning, causing a leak and temporary rush hour traffic delays, authorities said.
The ruptured pipe was reported at 3:40 a.m. near East Cesar Chavez and Eastern avenues, the California Highway Patrol reported.
According to a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman, the oil flow from the pipeline has been shut off, and crews will be working all day to repair it.
Fox11 reported some residents complained of the smell of petroleum in the air.
The CHP issued a SigAlert for the closure of the area near East Cesar Chavez and Eastern avenues for approximately six hours.
