A campaign to halt illegal sales at local smoke shops, particularly those selling prohibited flavored tobacco products that target minors, has been launched in Redondo Beach, the police department said Thursday.
Under California law and local rules, flavored tobacco products are banned. Stores found violating these laws will face the loss of their tobacco retail permit and/or business license, as well as heavy fines and fees, according to the police department.
Police and code enforcement officers, along with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, have conducted inspections of multiple smoke shops throughout the community. The sweeps focus on protecting public health and keeping harmful products away from children, authorities said. Investigators are looking for flavored vapes and tobacco-related products, illegal cannabis items, and sales to underage buyers.
“We are dedicated to keeping our neighborhoods and youth safe,” said Police Chief Steve Sprengel. “Businesses that profit from selling illegal products to our kids will be held accountable. We expect every shop owner in Redondo Beach to operate legally and responsibly.”
One inspection led to the permanent closure of a local smoke shop. Another enforcement action led to two administrative hearings, a court hearing and a settlement that resulted in the smoke shop receiving a 120-day business license suspension, $100,000 of monetary sanctions paid to the city, and the seizure of all illegal products.
Prior to reopening, the shop is also required to implement regulatory conditions that mirror the city’s new smoke shop ordinance that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2026, city officials said.
The police department intends to provide additional educational material to smoke shop owners, as well as conduct follow-up enforcement activities to ensure compliance. Residents can report suspected illegal sales to the Redondo Beach Police Department or the Code Enforcement Division.
