A 44-year-old man killed when a fire tore through a one-story house in Tarzana, which was later declared a crime scene, was identified Tuesday.

Flames were visible around 12:27 p.m. Thursday as the first crews arrived at 18324 Friar Street, near Victory Boulevard and Reseda Park, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Police were called because the victim had a firearm either in his possession or nearby, according to LAFD spokesman Jamie Stewart, who said the piece was secured.

About 35 firefighters responded and put the fire out in less than 20 minutes, Stewart said.

The patient was treated at the scene and then taken to a hospital, Stewart said.

He was later pronounced dead and identified Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as Stepan Stepanyan.

The house was being treated as a crime scene, Stewart said, and the Los Angeles Police Department and LAFD were in unified command regarding the blaze and investigation.
