A truck carrying 1,000 pounds of lithium-ion batteries began emitting smoke and gas Friday before stopping on Quail Lake Road near the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway south of Gorman, just shy of the Kern County line.

Around 6:50 a.m. Friday, the California Highway Patrol was asked by the Los Angeles County Fire Department to close the on- and off-ramps at Quail Lake Road, along with the transition road from the Grapevine section of the 5 Freeway to state Route 138, an officer said.

Hazmat crews at the scene north of Pyramid Lake reported the batteries were at a temperature of 150 degrees and rising as of around 9:30 a.m., according to a CHP incident log.

Traffic on the freeway was not impacted.
