A knife-wielding 20-year-old man who called 911 saying he was experiencing a mental health crisis was fatally shot by Irvine police officers Tuesday, authorities said.
Police were called to a home on Evening Breeze in the Turtle Rock neighborhood at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday regarding a man who said he was experiencing a mental health crisis and was armed with a knife, according to Ziggy Azarcon of the Irvine Police Department.
Crisis negotiation officers located the man in the area of Sungate and Silkwood, holding the knife, Azarcon said.
They negotiated with the man for more than an hour while Orange County Fire Authority firefighters and the Irvine Community Alternative Response and Engagement Team stood by, ready to provide medical and mental health services.
Finally, “the man charged at officers while holding the knife, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Azarcon said. “The man was struck by gunfire, and officers immediately rendered life-saving measures.”
The man was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center, where he died.
His name not released pending notification of his family, the spokesman said.
Irvine police detectives and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office were investigating the shooting, Azarcon said.
