A death investigation by sheriff’s homicide detectives was underway Monday following a fire that damaged an apartment unit in La Mirada, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 11:09 p.m. Sunday in the 12600 block of Oxford Drive, south of Imperial Highway, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Aaron Katon.

Smoke was coming out of the front door of a unit in the two-story building when firefighters arrived, Katon said.

One patient was removed from the unit at 11:26 p.m., he said.

The fire was out at 11:33 p.m., Katon said.

Katon confirmed that there was one fatality, but he said no additional details were available.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Information Bureau did not immediately confirm the fatality, but a deputy that detectives from the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau were dispatched to the scene to investigate.
