Two drivers were arrested on suspicion of criminal offenses and others were cited during a DUI checkpoint in Desert Hot Springs, police announced Monday.

“We are committed to taking impaired drivers off the road,” Police Chief Steven Shaw said in a statement. “Driving under the influence is not only dangerous, but also has major consequences.”

The checkpoint was held Friday on Palm Drive, north of Two Bunch Palms Trail, according to the Desert Hot Springs Police Department.

Out of 587 vehicles screened, three motorists were cited and two vehicles were towed.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI offense face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
