The Los Angeles Police Department was planning to conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday evening in Silver Lake.
The checkpoint will be held from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Sunset Boulevard and Coronado Street, west of North Alvarado Street.
The location was selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes and arrests, police said. Checkpoint locations are subject to change or cancellation.
Police reminded motorists that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol, and that some prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with driving. Driving under the influence of marijuana is also illegal.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the LAPD.
Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
