Two Compton elementary schools were among a handful of Southland campuses named Tuesday as winners of National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards by Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

Jefferson and Tibby elementary schools, part of the Compton Unified School District, were chosen for the honor, which recognizes high-performing students and best practices in teaching. A total of 337 schools nationwide received the awards.

The principals of the two Compton schools planned a noon news conference to talk about the award.

The National Blue Ribbon awards were started in 1982 by the U.S. Department of Education to recognize academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

Other Southern California winners of the award included Andrews School in Whittier, Del Sur Elementary in San Diego, Lanai Road Elementary in Encino, Los Molinos Elementary in Hacienda Heights, Huntington Seacliff Elementary in Huntington Beach, William Newland Elementary in Huntington Beach and Gretchen Whitney High in Cerritos.
