About two dozen people staged a protest in front of UCLA’s Powell Library Monday to voice opposition to tuition hikes approved by the University of California Board of Regents.
The protesters chanted slogans and some waved signs at passersby during the midday rally, which echoed similar actions taken on other UC campuses across the state.
There were no reports of any arrests.
The UC Board of Regents on Thursday approved tuition hikes of 5 percent a year for the next five years. The 5 percent increase will increase tuition for the 2015-16 school year by $612, to $12,804. Out-of-state students will pay the same increased rate, plus the non-resident fee of $22,878, which will also increase by the same percentage, according to UC.
The 5 percent increase assumes the state will provide the university system with a promised 4 percent increase in funding. UC officials noted that if the state’s funding increases further, it could reduce or even eliminate the need for the tuition hikes.
