Former Controller Wendy Greuel and actress Aimee Garcia were honored as Women of Distinction for their work on behalf of MOSTE, a nonprofit organization that seeks to motivate girls from underserved communities in Los Angeles County to attend and succeed in college.

MOSTE provides one-on-one mentoring from middle school through high school. Its participants attend workshops to provide them with a broad base of skills, including learning about colleges; time management; financial planning; and etiquette.

The group also organizes college tours, conducts an annual retreat and provides financial assistance both to attend college and for other expenses related to attending college.

MOSTE’s services are offered to girls at five middle schools — Samuel Gompers, George Washington Carver, Johnnie Cochran and the Los Angeles Leadership Academy in Los Angeles and Woodrow Wilson in Pasadena.

The group’s name is an acronym for Motivating Our Students Through Experience.

More information about MOSTE is available online at moste.org or by calling (213) 537-9157.
