Southland High students to produce videos on effects of gun violence

A contest was announced Monday for Southland high school students to produce videos on “the negative effects of gun violence on youth and the positive actions youth are taking to reduce it.”

The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship, said Kaile Shilling, executive director of the Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles, which joined the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., in announcing the contest.

“This scholarship award has long supported young leaders in violence prevention,” Shilling said. “We feel it is critical to (show) the real impacts of gun violence on communities, and to do so in the words of youth themselves.”

The Violence Policy Center is a national educational organization working to stop gun death and injury.

Student videos of up to three minutes in length must be submitted by Sept. 8. More information is available at http://www.vpcgla.org/videocontest2015/ .
