College of the Desert received a 2018 Bellwether Award Tuesday for its summer program that helps incoming students with their transition to college life.

Students who participate in the school’s three-week EDGE (Engage, Develop, Grow, Empower) bridge program get a review of math and English skills and learn “student success strategies.”

The annual awards given out at the Community College Futures Assembly in Florida recognize “outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community college into the future,” according to the Bellwether College Consortium.

Ten finalists are recognized in each of three categories, with College of the Desert named the winner of the Instructional Programs & Service category.

“The Board of Trustees and I are extremely proud of this recognition of the efforts of everyone at College of the Desert,” COD Superintendent and President Joel L. Kinnamon said. “We have a really great story to tell and we’re proud the Assembly recognized its value to our students and their success.”
