Teenage athletes with the potential to compete at the collegiate level — and beyond — in water polo will be in action at Riverside City College this weekend for the 2019 USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program National Championships.
The boys’ competition is scheduled to begin Friday night and continue into Sunday, while the girls’ rounds are slated for March 15-17.
Competition will be centered at the RCC Aquatics Complex.
“We are excited to bring our ODP National Championship back to Riverside,” said Ame Lawrence, USA Water Polo manager. “The whole Riverside community always does a wonderful job of making USA Water Polo feel at home, between fantastic facilities and excellent hospitality. We are confident this will once again be a great event, showcasing some of the top young talent in the United States.”
Most of the players are between 14 and 18 years old, including several from high schools in Riverside, organizers said.
College coaches are expected to be among those in attendance.
Teams from 13 zones will be competing, organizers said.
Top performers will be considered for placement on the USA Water Polo national team, according to the Riverside Sports Commission.
