Firefighters needed 24 minutes to extinguish a fire in one unit of a three-story apartment building in Playa Del Rey that had spread to another floor, authorities said early Thursday.

Crews responded at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday to the 8100 block of Manitoba Street, near St. Bernard High School, and located a fire burning in a second-floor unit and flames had spread onto the patio of the third floor of the building, according to Amy Bastman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A total of 31 firefighters were able to quickly stop the fire from spreading to adjacent units and inside the unit above, Bastman said.

Knockdown was declared at 11:59 p.m., she said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
