The Palm Springs Masonic Lodge Tuesday evening will host its once-monthly Socratic discussion aimed at tackling big-idea topics that relate back to Freemasonry.

The Trivium Discussion Group will discuss “initiation.” This is the third year Palm Springs Masonic Lodge No. 693, which formed in 1947, has hosted the public discussions, which organizers say are aimed at spurring conscious conversation in the Coachella Valley.

“We wanted a way to be able to give back to the community by opening our doors and sharing great conversations with people, and at the same time introducing the public to Masonic principles,” said Cesar Rubio, lodge secretary,

Initiation is at the core of Freemasonry. Candidates are initiated into the brotherhood through elaborate closed-door ceremonies, but similar rites of passage can also be found in the Christian baptism, the Jewish bat and bar mitzvah and even college graduation. Tuesday night’s event will include a discussion of such ceremonies and how they relate to Freemasonry, Rubio said.

Trivium discussions take place on the second Tuesday of every month.

Fellowship begins at 6 p.m., with the discussion starting at 7 p.m. at the lodge at 450 S. Avenida Caballeros.
