The security guard of an aeronautics and aviation training school in Inglewood was in custody Saturday, accused of shooting two women there and leaving them in critical condition.

The shooting occurred about 3:45 p.m. Friday inside an office on the campus of the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in the 8900 block of Aviation Boulevard, between Arbor Vitae Street and Hillcrest Boulevard, authorities said.

Both victims were taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to media reports.

Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts told KCAL Saturday that Figueroa was a recent employee at the school. He earlier described the shooting as an act of “workplace violence.”

Butts confirmed that a 9mm shell casing was found at the scene and noted that DNA or fingerprint evidence may be present on it.

The suspect was contacted and detained by Los Angeles Police Department officers in that city at about 6 p.m., according to Inglewood police.

He was identified Saturday as 40-year-old Jesse Figueroa. His city of residence was not provided. Sheriff’s inmate records show Figueroa was formally arrested at 7:21 p.m. Friday and booked into the Inglewood Police Department at 12:33 a.m. Saturday, then was moved into the L.A. County Inmate Reception Center at 6:30 p.m. Saturday to be held on $1 million bail.

Spartan College Inglewood Campus president Chris Becker issued a statement Saturday: “We are deeply saddened and upset by what transpired. Our thoughts are with our two staff members who are in medical care and their families during this time. Counseling services and support are being arranged for students and staff for the coming days.”

The names of the victims and their current conditions were not released by Inglewood police.
