Los Angeles Unified School District officials said Tuesday the district will take steps to protect students and staff from soaring temperatures expected during a heat wave set to back much of the region for the rest of the week.
The district noted that many areas are likely to see near-record temperatures during the heat wave.
Protective measures being implemented by the district include:
— modification of scheduled for recess and lunch to minimize outdoor exposure;
— rescheduling or modifying schedules for high school athletic events and outdoor clubs;
— ensuring air conditioners are functioning, and preparing portable units if needed;
— relocating students to cooler spaces if air conditioners fail in classrooms;
— closing doors and windows to maintain cooler temperatures;
— providing frequent water breaks;
— monitor and adjust physical activities; and
— limiting the use of hot surfaces such as asphalt, concrete and artificial turn to cooler early hours.
Students were also urged to wear breathable, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and to apply sunscreen and wear hats while outdoors, and to stay hydrated. Students who experience symptoms of heat-related illness such as fatigue, dehydration or muscle cramps should report them immediately to a teacher or coach.
