High school students across the Coachella Valley will reportedly walk out Friday to protest immigration enforcement as part of a nationwide movement following the fatal shootings of American citizens by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis.
Students from La Quinta and Coachella high schools among other facilities were expected to walkout Friday morning during an organized, student-led protests.
Indio City Councilman Oscar Ortiz expressed his thoughts on social media Friday saying, “With the student protests/walkouts happening today, our city’s priority will be student safety. We will also work to protect the freedom of speech of our students and residents. To our students, voice your concerns for our community loudly and sternly. Demand the change you want to see.”
Supervisor Manuel Perez said he planned to join students outside of Coachella City Hall as a means to show support to students. Perez condemned the actions of ICE agents as “overreaching and fear mongering gestapo tactics used against citizens.” “Communities terrorized based on the color of their skin, and it’s not only happening in Minnesota. We are experiencing it here in the Coachella Valley, too,” Perez said in a statement Thursday.
The nationwide movement, “Ice Out of Everywhere,” is scheduled throughout California all day Friday following immigration agents fatally shooting Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The large-scale day of action has fueled solidarity actions by high school students throughout the Coachella Valley.
