Students and teachers at an adult school in Sun Valley were expected to stage a walkout Wednesday to protest the dismissal of a longtime instructor.
The demonstration was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the East Valley Skills Center, part of the North Valley Occupational Center, 8601 Arleta Ave.
Organizers said the protest is in response to the pending dismissal of Dawn Wilson, a computer teacher who has worked in Los Angeles Unified for more than two decades.
According to organizers, Wilson was told by school administrators she must resign or face termination, but was not given a reason for the action.
A LAUSD spokesperson declined to comment on the matter Tuesday, citing confidential personnel rules.
Students and colleagues described Wilson as a veteran educator who has led professional development workshops and helped train students in computer and emerging technologies.
Organizers contend the dismissal is unusual given Wilson’s tenure and performance history, and they said the action has prompted concern among students.
“Ms. Wilson has an innate ability to perceive the areas that the student needs to reinforce,” student Myriam Gomez said in a statement. “Besides her patience and mastery of computer topics, her extraordinary human qualities make her an excellent teacher.”
