Angelenos would be able to mail out their vote-by-mail ballots on election day and still have their votes counted as long as they are received within three days, under a proposed ordinance going before city leaders on Wednesday

The change would line up the city’s election laws to a new state law signed in September by Gov. Jerry Brown that allows vote-by-mail ballots to be postmarked on election day and received within three days.

Los Angeles residents voting in city elections currently must get their ballots to the city by election day. Any ballots received after the close of election day are not counted.

If the City Council’s Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Committee approves the amendment, it will be voted on by the City Council later that morning.
