The city of Pasadena will begin accepting applications Thursday from people interested in filling a City Council seat left vacant by Terry Tornek’s recent election as mayor.
Eligible candidates must be registered voters living within Pasadena’s 7th City Council District and must also have a nomination petition signed by a minimum of 25 registered voters from the district.
Application materials and petition papers for prospective candidates are available at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave. Applications must be submitted by June 1.
An ad hoc committee consisting of Vice Mayor Gene Masuda and Councilwoman Margaret McAustin will review applications for the seat and develop interview questions. The applicants will be interviewed at a special council meeting, which will be held at a June date yet to be determined.
The City Council will ask questions and view six-minute presentations from each candidate during the meeting, according to the city. The council will vote to approve a candidate during the special meeting, requiring five affirmative votes to confirm a candidate. If five council members can’t agree on an applicant by July 17, the appointee will be chosen by lot, as per the City Charter.
