Donald Trump is taking the country out of the Paris climate accords despite environmentalist outrage, but efforts to cut pollution in Southern California are moving ahead as Metrolink is testing new diesel locomotives equipped with technology that can reduce emissions by up to 85 percent.
The agency announced Friday that the testing of the “Tier 4” locomotives began earlier this week and will be conducted system-wide in various Southland communities for up to three months, Metrolink reported.
Metrolink is the first passenger rail system in the nation to use Tier 4 technology, the agency said.
“To minimize the impact to surrounding communities, Metrolink has scheduled nearly all testing to occur during daytime hours instead of at night,” a Metrolink statement said.
The testing is a federal regulatory requirement before the locomotives can be used for passenger service.
