A worker was killed Monday in a horrifying fall into a “confined space” pit at the city of Los Angeles’ Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant.

The deadly fall was reported at 12:38 p.m. in the 12000 block of South Vista Del Mar, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

The 43-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene “after sustaining severe trauma from an approximately 25-foot fall to the bottom of a (15-by-15 foot) pit-like confined space that was mostly dry, with a small amount of moisture at bottom, utilized for unknown purpose,” the LAFD said in a statement.

The circumstances of the death were under investigation. Cal-OSHA, the stage agency which investigates workplace accidents, was notified.
