Democrat Mike Fong was a landslide winner over Republican Burton Brink in the special election to fill the vacant 49th Assembly District seat in the western San Gabriel Valley, according to semifinal results released Tuesday evening by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk.
Fong, director of policy and government relations for the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment and member of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees, received 68.13% of the vote to 31.87% for Brink, a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sergeant, in the predominantly Democratic district.
The special election was called by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill the seat previously held by Democrat Edwin Chau of Arcadia, who was appointed by Newsom on Nov. 29 to be a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge.
The district consists of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City and portions of Montebello and South El Monte.
