A 47-year-old male passenger was killed and a second occupant injured when an SUV ran off the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway and crashed into a Metro Line maintenance yard fence in Long Beach before sunrise Thursday.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at 2:57 a.m. Thursday to the northbound Del Amo Boulevard off-ramp where they learned the driver of the SUV slammed into a freeway sign before leaving the freeway and striking the fence, trapping the vehicle’s occupants, CHP Officer Megan Curtis told City News Service.

One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and a second person was taken to a hospital by Long Beach Fire Department personnel in an unknown condition.

The dead passenger was later identified by the Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner as Rico Pallares.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
