Cathedral City Assistant City Manager Anne Ambrose will become interim city manager effective Sept. 20.

She will take over for the retiring Charles McClendon.

“Anne has demonstrated exceptional leadership and comprehensive knowledge of our city’s operations over the past two and a half years,” Mayor Nancy Ross said in a statement. “Her experience and familiarity with our programs and projects make her the ideal choice to ensure continuity of service during this transition period.”

Ambrose has worked for more than 25 years in local government and was involved in the recovery efforts from tropical storm Hilary and in implementing the city’s five-year strategic plan.

Her previous roles include interim city manager for California City in Kern County, director of public safety and community relations and director of administrative services for the city of Palmdale.

“I’m honored by the council’s confidence in my ability to serve Cathedral City in this expanded role,” Ambrose said.

McClendon will retire Sept. 19 after 11 years in the role. He started in 2014 and was responsible for spearheading the construction of the community amphitheater and Esperanza Park and is credited with strengthening the city’s finances.

He was presented with a key to the city Wednesday as a “symbol of gratitude,” city officials said.

During the recruitment process for a permanent city manager, Ambrose will serve as interim city manager and assistant city manager. City officials said the search process is expected to conclude within six months, by early 2026.
