Comic actor and musician Jack Black will perform during the Academy Awards ceremony in an appearance described only as a “very special sequence,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday.

Black is best known for films such as “Shallow Hal,” “School of Rock,” “Tropic Thunder” and “High Fidelity.” He also provides the voice of the title character in the animated “Kung Fu Panda” films. He is also the lead singer for the comedy rock duo Tenacious D, which he created in 1994 with Kyle Gass.

The 87th Oscars will be held Feb. 22 at the Dolby Theatre.
