The rapper known as Nipsey Hussle was booked on suspicion of drug possession Thursday after police in Burbank pulled him over and found an allegedly unauthorized bottle of codeine in the vehicle.

Hussle, whose birth name is Ermias Joseph Asghedom, was driving a black Mercedes-Benz S600 in the area of Magnolia Boulevard and Ford Street about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday when he was stopped by officers for vehicle code violations, Burbank police Lt. Adam Cornils.

Asghedom, 29, was arrested after it was determined that he had an outstanding arrest warrant related to a citation for driving with a suspended license, Cornils said.

While searching the car with Asghedom’s consent, officers found a bottle of codeine with its label “obliterated,” the lieutenant said.

Asghedom claimed the bottle was his, but was unable to produce evidence that the codeine had been properly prescribed to him, Cornils said.

A cup of ice and a bottled soft drink were also found, Cornils said, adding that abusers often consume codeine after mixing it with soft drinks.

Ashgedom was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and was also booked for the outstanding warrant.

He was released Thursday morning after posting $1,000 bail.
