It’s the dinosaurs by a nose, as “Jurassic World” nudged out “Inside Out” to be No. 1 for the fourth straight week at the box office windows in North America.
The dino-pic was on track to sell $30.9 million in tickets this weekend, on its way to soaring to nearly $1.4 billion in ticket sales worldwide. That makes it the fifth-biggest blockbuster in Hollywood history.
Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian at Rentrak said “Jurassic World” is the first film since “Furious 7” — also from Universal — to claim the No. 1 spot in the U.S. and Canada for four straight weeks.
“Inside Out” from Disney/Pixar was overshadowed by the Jurassic beasts this summer, but “continued to enjoy its incredibly strong run,” Degarabedian said. It was predicted to deal $30.1 in tickets this weekend, for a four-week North American tally of $246.1 million.
Two movies opened in the shadow of the blockbusters. “Terminator Genisys,” starring a certain former California governor, debuted with an estimated $28.7 million in sales.
And “Magic Mike XXL” opened with $12 million in estimated sales.
“Ted 2” limped along with $11 million in sales in its second week of exhibition, analysts said.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were “Max” ($7 million), “Spy” ($5.5 million), “San Andreas” ($3 million), “Me And Earl And The Dying Girl” ($1.3 million) and “Dope” ($1 million).
