Leonardo DiCaprio wears a heavy beard and breathes heavily in “The Revenant” trailer released Friday by 20th Century Fox.

“Inspired by true events,” the film tells how explorer Hugh Glass, played by the Oscar winner, is attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team in 1820s America.

Directed by Academy Award winner González Iñárritu of “Birdman” fame, the movie is based loosely on Michael Punke’s book “The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge.” Theatrical release is promised for December.

What’s a revenant? European folklore calls it a corpse that has returned from the grave to terrorize the living. At least six movies and TV series have used the word in their titles since 1903, including the 2009 horror comedy “The Revenant” shot in Los Angeles.
