The company behind “The Chronicles of Narnia” film series will co-finance and co-produce DreamWorks Studios’ “A Dog’s Purpose,” based on the best-selling novel of the same name, it was announced Wednesday.

Walden Media is also the producer of “Bridge to Terabithia,” “Charlotte’s Web” and the “Journey to the Center of the Earth” film series.

DreamWorks also announced that Dennis Quaid, Britt Robertson (“Tomorrowland,” “Delivery Man”), K.J. Apa (“Shortland Street”), Juliet Rylance (“The Knick,” “Frances Ha”) and Peggy Lipton (“Mod Squad,” “Twin Peaks”) have joined the cast of the film, which is being directed by Lasse Hallstrom (“The Hundred-Foot Journey,” “Chocolat”).

Production begins this month in Winnipeg, Canada, on the multi- generational story of a devoted dog finding his purpose in the lives of the humans he loves.

W. Bruce Cameron’s book, which spent 52 weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list, has been translated into 20 languages and published in 29 countries.
