Matt Damon’s outer-space adventure “The Martian” dominated North American theaters over the weekend, posting a stellar opening to debut atop the box office, according to final figures released Monday.
“The Martian” earned $54.3 million between Friday and Sunday to best the competition, according to Rentrak. The animated “Hotel Transylvania 2” placed second with $33.2 million.
The drama “Sicario” placed third with $12.1 million, followed by “The Intern” with $11.7 million.
“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” came in fifth with $7.8 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Black Mass” ($5.8 million); “Everest” ($5.6 million); “The Visit” ($3.9 million); “War Room” ($2.8 million); and “The Perfect Guy” ($2.4 million).
