Born Issur Danielovitch in Amsterdam, New York, Douglas is the son of Bryna “Bertha” and Herschel “Harry” Danielovitch — Jewish immigrants from an area now known as Belarus.
After growing up as Izzy Demsky, he changed his name to Kirk Douglas before entering the United States Navy during World War II.
In a 60-year career, he made more than 90 movies.
