If it’s scary enough, you can make millions on a moderate-budget film.
“Don’t Breathe” opened in the number one spot at the North American box offices this weekend, with $26.1 million in ticket sales.
And overall receipts were up this weekend over a year ago, according to the survey of movie studios by comScore.
“Don’t Breathe” is an R-rated suspense horror flick, shot on a modest budget, said comScore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. He credited a “terrific” trailer for drumming up attendance.
“Suicide Squad” was in second place, with a $12.1 million weekend and nearly $283 million in receipts over four weeks.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were “Kubo And the Two Strings” ($7.9 million), “Sausage Party” ($3.1 million), “Mechanic: Resurrection” (debuting with $7.5 million), “Pete’s Dragon” ($7.3 million), “War Dogs” ($7.3 million), “Bad Moms” ($5.8 million), “Jason Bourne” ($5.2 million) and “Ben-Hur” ($4.5 million).
